The Man Who Never Left
If you’ve ever been into the Low Lights Tavern, you’ll know the walls are covered in it.
Old paintings. Photos. Bits of the Quay as it used to be — rougher, busier, louder. Most people glance once and move on.
But if you take your time… there’s something off.
In more than one of them, there’s a man.
And once you see him, you start spotting him everywhere.
Different paintings. Different years. Same bloke.
It gets mentioned now and then — usually a couple of pints in.
“That’s the same lad, that.”
People laugh it off. Say it’s just artists influencing each other. Same style, same figures. Makes sense.
Until you actually look properly.
Because it’s not just the clothes.
It’s the stance. The tilt of the head. The pint in hand.
Like he hasn’t just been painted - like he’s been watched.
There’s a few stories about him.
One says he was a fisherman who never came back from a storm - but somehow still found his way back to the bar.
Another says he worked the Quay his whole life, and when it was finally time to leave… he didn’t.
Just stayed where he knew.
But here’s where it gets strange.
People say they’ve seen him outside the paintings.
Nothing dramatic. No big moment.
Just a glance - someone stood at the end of the bar.
Old jacket. Dark hat.
You look away. Look back.
Gone.
Staff have mentioned it over the years, quietly.
“He’s been in again.”
“Who?”
“…you know.”
And if you go in now, and take your time, and actually look at the walls…
You’ll see him.
More than once.
Always the same.
Always there.
So next time you’re in the Low Lights, pint in hand —
Have a look at the bar.
Then have a look at the paintings.
Because if you see him in both…
You won’t be the first.
